Vi Spring
Vi-Spring has been making luxury handmade beds since 1901, when engineer James Marshall brought his pioneering pocketed spring system to England and changed how the world thought about sleep. More than 120 years later, every Vi-Spring mattress is still handmade in Plymouth using natural fillings and no synthetic materials or chemicals.
The fillings used across the range include British fleece wool, Platinum Certified British fleece wool, Shetland wool, horsehair, horsetail, and cotton, with cashmere and silk in the higher-end models. These materials are chosen for their practical properties as much as their luxury feel: natural fibres wick away moisture, regulate temperature, and hold their resilience over a very long time. Each mattress is hand-tufted, hand-side-stitched, and fitted with air vents. Every model in the range comes with a 30-year guarantee, which is a remarkable commitment and one that puts the price in a different perspective.
The range we stock at Carters covers several models at different price points within the Vi-Spring collection. Our specialist team in the showroom can walk you through the differences and help you find the right tension and model for how you sleep.
How long does a Vi-Spring mattress last?
A very long time. The 30-year guarantee is the clearest indication of this, and it's a genuine commitment rather than small-print-heavy marketing. The Vanadium spring wire used in Vi-Spring's pocket springs is notably resilient, and the calico spring pockets are built to match. Natural fillings like wool, horsehair, and cotton also maintain their properties over time considerably better than synthetic alternatives. Natural fillings do settle during the first few weeks of use, which is completely normal. Turning your mattress regularly will help ensure even wear and extend its life further. With good care and a quality base, a Vi-Spring mattress can realistically serve you for decades.
Which is better: Vi-Spring or Hypnos?
Both are genuinely excellent luxury mattress brands with over a century of heritage, and both make handmade mattresses using natural fillings. The differences come down to feel and priorities. Vi-Spring uses exclusively natural materials including horsehair, Shetland wool, British fleece wool, and cotton, producing a plush, enveloping feel that many people describe as sleeping inside the mattress rather than on top of it. They offer a 30-year guarantee. Hypnos, who hold the Royal Warrant as the official mattress supplier to the Royal residences, tend to produce a firmer sleeping surface and offer a 10-year guarantee. If you prefer softness and depth, Vi-Spring is likely the better fit. If you prefer firmer support, Hypnos may suit you better. Trying both in person is by far the best way to decide.
